Reiki is a healing practice that originated in Tibet. Reiki practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above the person receiving treatment, with the goal of facilitating the person's own healing response. Reiki is based on the idea that there is a universal (or source) energy that supports the body's innate healing abilities. The healer channels this energy, allowing it to flow from their hands to the body of the recipient, facilitating healing.

In a Reiki session, the client lies down or sits comfortably, fully clothed. The practitioner's hands are placed lightly on or just above the client's body, palms down, using a series of different hand positions. Each position is held for about 2 to 5 minutes, or until the practitioner feels that the flow of energy—experienced as sensations such as heat or tingling in the hands—has slowed or stopped. The recipient may experience a deep state of relaxation during a Reiki session. They might also feel warm, tingly, sleepy, or refreshed. The client may also notice faster healing and may also experience immediate relief. The number of sessions depends on the health needs of the client. Typically, the practitioner delivers at least four sessions of 30 to 90 minutes each. Reiki can also be used for non-physical treatment, for example, emotional distress, a stressful event, or even to shift the energy in a home.

Reiki is a complementary therapy to help with your physical ailments, or to help you emotionally. It is suitable for anyone, including animals. Reiki can be used in conjunction with other complementary or conventional medical treatments.

You may experience any one of the following symptoms :

• Deep relaxation
• Warmth
• Floating sensations
• Tingling
• A general sense of peace & calm
• Seeing different colours
• May shed emotional tears
• Feel revitalised

The experiences vary between individuals and also from session to session. Sometimes the benefit of a Reiki treatment is obvious and other times it needs time and patience for the benefits to come through.

Reiki treatments are also used for healing animals who love this energy to help them to restore to their optimum health.
